This practical activity has been designed to allow students to demonstrate their understanding of igneous rocks in a hands-on and engaging manner. Students will play the role of geologists – working in a team to correctly identify a variety of rock samples. The activity can be modified in its delivery, depending on how many students are in your class and what rock samples are available at your school (basalt, scoria, granite, pumice, obsidian and dolerite). This activity works best as a competition – see who can correctly identify the samples first!
