Rocks: Igneous Rocks
All you need to add are rocks! This packet contains a 1.5 page close read that explains the formation of igneous rocks, texture (intrusive, extrusive, glassy, fine grained, coarse grained), color (mafic vs. felsic; along with a discussion of silica content). Student questions included, along with teacher answer key.
A second close read is included entitled "Granite vs. Banana Bread," that uses an analogy to explain why not all samples of granite (or any other rock) may not necessarily look the same. Student questions included.
An igneous rock identification lab is included with an identification chart and recording sheet. All you need to add are rocks.
***** You should have 8 of the following for the lab: granite, diorite, gabbro, peridotite, rhyolite, andesite, basalt, obsidian, pumice, tuff, breccia, ash, cinders.*****
'Sorting Sheets' are included to help students learn both to identify igneous rocks, and to reinforce the ideas of intrusive vs. extrusive, felsic vs. mafic, and types of textures. Laminate these for years of use!
***Rocks in sorting activity: Granite, andesite, obsidian, gabbro, rhyolite, pumice, basalt.***
All of these activities were HUGE hits in my classroom! This would fall in my top 10 "ideas that really worked" category. It truly makes teaching and learning about rocks more enjoyable.
