September Activities

Students will develop skills over time through practice and repetition. Using a spiralled approach to teaching students will learn a variety of skills which are revisited throughout the year as they master different skills and goals within their literacy journey to become stronger readers and writers.

Week #1 - Miss Nelson is Missing

Students will develop skills that support oral listening skills. They will begin to look at how to make predictions and ask questions with this text. Finally they will be introduced to how to write a recount in this introductory week.

Week #2 - Officer Buckle and Gloria

Learn key conversational skills to build classroom discussions. Students will also

learn how to participate in knowledge building book talks as a whole group. This will support their continued exploration of make predictions and asking questions before they read.

Week #3 - The Paperboy

This week students will continue to develop a stronger understanding on how to questioning and predicting keep their reading brain active. They will develop a beginning understanding of the format to respond to reading. By the end of this week students will have developed the stamina to sustain independent work skills and are ready to begin their independent work centers as part of the Ignited Literacy series.

Week #4 - Thank You Mr. Falker

This week students will explore character traits and how authors use a characters actions to build character in a story. Students will continue to develop ideas that are of personal interest to write about. Students will work through reading and writing workshop centers this week completely for the first time.
