When I formed the drama club for 3rd-5th graders at my school, I had no idea scripts cost hundreds to thousands of dollars! I found some online readers' theater scripts, but none that were for more than a small handful of children or took more than a few minutes to perform. Necessity being the mother of invention, I started writing my own.
The Ignoramuses is a comedic look at a serious issue. Instead of leaving mainstream society to form a better way of life, they form an island community where they are free to litter and pollute, with disastrous results.
There are 31 parts (smaller roles can be condensed for fewer students), and production time ran approximately 40 minutes when performed for my school. The drama club at my school is a readers' theater, so the children didn't have to memorize the lines-- although that's your choice, of course. In our half-hour weekly readings, the children got the full weight of comprehension, vocabulary, and fluency development as they practiced their reading roles.
It's also a handy tool for classroom use, with all students having parts ranging from just a few lines for struggling or shy readers to strong leads for the extroverts.
I hope you enjoy it!
