This interactive project is a favorite of my students. This gives them the opportunity to work with a partner or small group to create a giant timeline of our second semester curriculum. This project focuses on historical thinking skills including chronology, document analysis, etc.
This download includes directions, rubric for students, and over forty iconic images to be used on the timeline. The only item you need to provide would be an extremely long piece of paper. This can easily be done by cutting a roll of butcher block.
An alternative is to create a CLASS timeline. Students can create “pieces” of the timeline and the class can attach each piece together to create the massive timeline. This method allows students to write longer summations which can focus on the common core standards.
Another alternative is to assign each student 1-2 events and have them create an 8.5 x 11 poster including an image and written summation for each WITHOUT the date. Students can then complete an activity in groups by putting the posters in order on a timeline (you can do this by hanging them on a board, making a timeline on the floor, in the hallway, etc.)
This is a really wonderful end of the year activity and perfect review for exams!
