Common core asks students to either picture or describe a story's illustrations to help them understand what is conveyed in the words of the story. This graphic organizer takes it one step further and asks students to draw their own picture of what is happening in the story.
I usually read a portion of the story out loud (sometimes a part of the story that already has a picture associated with it.) Students are then asked to draw what they saw in their minds and how it helped them understand the story. In younger grades, we would discuss what they student's visualized as I read. In older grades, we would analyze the student's picture versus the author's picture to see how it helped convey the message of the print.
