1 MB|44 Student Pages (22 Prompts: Both types of Handwriting Lines included)
Thanks so much for looking at this product! Imagine That: Writing Prompts is perfect for stirring a child's imagination. These can be used as a whole class creative writing activity OR can be used in centers, as Do-Nows, Homework, left for substitute, etc. The possibilities are endless! One of my colleagues made a booklet with all prompts included and sent home at the end of the year. The growth I saw was amazing!
I’ve included a template so kids can write own prompts for the class or friends, or so you can create new ones and add to this product yourself.
I copy the prompts two-sided with the second page being a full handwriting page INCLUDED! All prompts come with BOTH handwriting lines!) for those that want to write more.
Before I give one to the kids, I model a lot. When I first used these, the pictures were always creative but the writing was lackluster. I reminded them that the words MUST match the picture and urge them to be creative! I make up a few to share with the kids. I modeled one for five straight days before I had them complete one. They were thrilled to finally get one! Modeling has improved the results tenfold!
I keep these prompts in their writing folders. I’ve often found that the kids like to reread and add to them as time goes on. This is especially true after they listen to their classmates share.
TIP: When my kids edit, I have them use colored pencils to make their corrections as well as when they want to add on to the story. It’s a great way to assess their progress. For example, my students love going back to correct the spelling of their word wall words as they learn new ones. Seeing a different colored pencil is a quick way for me to see who is applying various skills.
My Pick-a-Prompt writing products are a fun change of pace for my students. They love the fact that they have a CHOICE of topic. They get to decide whether they want to share their thoughts, opinions, make lists, write letters, songs, poems, etc., and even if they want a prompt that allows them to be a bit silly at times!
✿There are eight pages of prompts with three prompts on each page. Kids highlight their chosen prompt or simply put an X on it and respond to that prompt.
✿I run these prompts two-sided with the back being the fully lined page that’s included in this packet. I always have extra lined-only pages run off for my voracious writers! I get quite a few two-three page responses!
✿All prompts are available with primary and secondary handwriting lines which make these appropriate for Grades 1-4.
✿If you walk into my room, I usually have several of these hanging up around the room. I also use them for homework once a week and the kids partner share responses during morning meeting the next day. Sharing responses allows the children to get to know their classmates a bit better and helps foster a stronger classroom community.
✿As always, I model, model, and model again several of these before giving them out. It make such a huge difference in the quality they produce! The kids know that I won’t accept one word or sentence answers! The more I model and have kids share responses, the better the results are from the whole class.
