Just as Renaissance painters honed their skills by imitating the masters, students can improve their writing skills by imitating talented writers. I developed these author studies as a way to survive last period Friday classes, but they can be easily altered to fit your needs. First Friday: Mini-lesson on grammar and conventions found in the piece "Here is New York," research White with primary and secondary sources, read aloud the part that students will have imitated. Second Friday: After having a week to think about their own city, neighborhood or school, students imitate the piece using the structure provided. Third Friday: Peer edit and revise. Fourth Friday: Share out!
