In this simple to use skit, illustrate to kids the contrasting impact of immigrants after they arrived in our country. "Soup" obviously refers to the great America "melting pot" metaphor, where new arrivals were encouraged to speak English and dress like an American. But sometimes folks retain their language, customs, religion, or more, and instead of mixing in, they create this wonderful "salad" of diversity. With just a few simple props and the guide provided, kids will easily visualize past and current impacts of immigration on American culture. Though an Ohio 4th Grade standard, it easily applies to any curriculum that includes the impact of immigration. Additional information regarding push and pull factors and the waves of immigration is also provided. Enjoy!
