This idea came to me after visiting one of the "Escape the Rooms". This activity focuses on students using context clues to determine definitions of words.
Due to low math scores in my school, I incorporated a little math into the activity to increase the level of engagement and to work on the students' math skills as well. Once the students match up all of the vocabulary words to their definitions, the students then use the vocabulary words to solve the equation for each section. The goal is to find the correct 3 digit combination. Each section of the activity is designated for 1 digit of the combination.
To increase the level of engagement even more, I bought the reprogrammable locks (Target or Walmart has them), and set them to the specific combination for that day. I have the locks keep a candy jar shut or a jar that contained a tac in it closed. If the students get the correct words/definitions and in turn the correct combo, they can then open the candy jar and get a piece of candy, or grab the tac and pop the balloon above them that contains the candy. I switch it up from time to time because the balloon part can be a lot to keep up with!
This is a popular activity with my students so more topics using this method will added to my site.
