This was updated May 23, 2018: Thirty teachers have purchased this "Central America" product, and 51 downloaded it when it was free.
This power point serves as an introduction to the border crisis whereby massive amounts of migrants / refugees from Central America have been streaming across the southern border of the USA. Many of the migrants are unaccompanied children. This issue sparks significant controversy, and much debate as to why these children are coming here, and what we should do about it. DACA is receiving a tremendous amount of attention.
This power point consists of a variety of maps, graphs, charts and lists which will involve students in understanding the crisis, and to ask lots of questions.
This power point provides an overview as to causes of out-migration from 3 countries in particular: Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador. The reason for the emigration varies greatly from country to country. One section of the power point goes into much greater depth regarding Guatemala. If you don’t know much about Guatemala, I think you’ll be shocked by a lot of the information.
Besides the power point, I’ve included a chart of Central America statistics and a question sheet which will enhance your student’s curiosity about the topic. Additionally, I've included a guided note sheet which corresponds to the power point, and a very informative article on DACA.
The amount of time needed to go through the information depends very much on how much you engage your students in discussion - anywhere from 1 to 2 hours.
