Immigration to Canada After Confederation

Learn about the immigrants that came to Canada during the Third Wave (1890s-1910s). Students learn about traveling to Canada, timelines, and how immigrants lived in early Canada. The activities include writing, reading, drawing, presenting, collaborating in groups, and working individually, with only moments of prep.

Start by seeing what students already know about immigration with a simple writing activity.

Through reading accounts from immigrants, students will explore the challenges and sacrifices immigrants made in the hope of a new life in Canada during the beginning of the twentieth century.

Finally, students will learn about traveling by ship to Canada and quarantining at Grosse Île (Canada's first quarantine station).

This historical product includes:

• seven reading passages from the perspectives of the immigrants who came to Canada from a variety of countries and for a variety of reasons

This task aligns with:

• Social Studies Alberta Program of Studies Grade 5. We recommend this product for Grade 5+ based on the reading level and content.

This set supports:

• any lesson about the immigration of people in Canada after Confederation.
• Social Studies Alberta Program of Studies Grade 7, especially if you have students with slightly lower than grade-level reading ability.

It has been classroom tested with students in Grades Four and Five with success, though Grade Four students required extra reading support.
