Social Studies has become one of my favorite topics to teach, but I noticed often times I couldn't find resources that dig deep into current issues that our country is dealing with, as well as issues that directly Impact my students since most of them are first generation immigrants. We introduce geography and movement in fourth grade, and this is the perfect addition to that Social Studies unit.
This resource is jam packed with informational passages, writing templates, informational transition word list, KWL sheets and even a letter template if students are moved to write to their current governor on the topic.
This Informational Reading Passage Packet that can
be used with the teacher, with a partner or independently. You can easily break this resource into units, or even set it up as a research project. In my classroom I plan on using this text to dig deep into our Geography unit, practice annotation, expanding vocabulary, voicing an opinion using evidence and details to then write a letter to persuade our legislation to improve immigration policies. The possibilities are endless. I hope you enjoy teaching this to your students and I hope that your students will have meaningful conversations that encourage open and respectful dialogue amongst students.
