By using the film Ratatouille students see the differences between these two difficult tenses in a very contextualized format. The textbook activities that accompany it are from Discovering French Blanc but can be adapted. First watch a 5 minute clip of the movie in French, and students answer questions (all attached by a paper clip on file). There is a power point that separates when to use which one using Ratatouille and then the students use eraser boards to practice which one they would use. Complete with a speaking activity and the students are one their way to learning the differences!
