In this highly-engaging lesson, students are guided through the events that led to the first impeachment of a president of the United States in American History, the impeachment of Andrew Johnson!
Students view a 25-page PowerPoint presentation and complete an engaging guided-note packet that outlines the events that led to Johnson's impeachment. Students are introduced to Lincoln's (and subsequently Johnson's) cabinet, the Proclamation of Amnesty, the term "dis-unionists", the first Civil Rights Act, the creation of the 14th Amendment, race riots in the South, the "Swing Around the Circle" speeches, Radical Republicans, the 5 military districts, the Tenure of Office Act, the forced removal of Secretary of War Edwin Stanton, and the subsequent charges filed by the House of Representatives!
Also included at the end of the guided notes is a political cartoon assignment!
This resource includes a paper in-class version and a 1:1 Google compatible version to be used in conjunction with Google Classroom. Just follow the included instructions for how to access the Google version, then share the resource through Google or assign via Google Classroom. This will allow students to type directly into the document!
