Students are introduced to imperialism and where it comes from (the ideas of Assimilation, Social Darwinism, Paternalism, Nationalism), then students begin by studying the most-iconic example of imperialism in the Berlin Conference of 1884 that led to the Scramble for Africa. From there, students are guided through King Leopold's atrocities in the Congo, the role of the British in South Africa (the Zulu Wars and Boer Wars), and the creation of the Suez Canal and occupation of Egypt to promote British interests. Students learn about the power of the British East India Company in India, which led to the Sepoy Mutiny and the Indian independence movement of Mohandas Gandhi.
The presentation also covers imperial efforts from many other countries, including the role of the French in Indochina and their involvement in Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia, as well as the Opium Wars, Taiping Rebellion, the Boxer Rebellion in China. In the far east, students learn about the opening of Japan with Matthew Perry, the Sino-Japanese War, the Russo-Japanese War, and the Japanese annexation of Korea. Last but not least, students receive instruction on imperialism in the Americas, including the US acquisition of Hawaii and Samoa, as well as Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines in the Spanish-American War.
