Implementing Instruction for Written Response [FREE]

After reaching a point where students can read and understand the text, we work with them on oral responding to specific questions such as retelling, summarizing and more all in an oral format. Transferring this oral response into a written response gets tricky. Students often struggle with putting the words on paper.

Implementing specific, scaffolded instruction with multiple opportunities will benefit all students.
As always, teachers will need to model numerous times written responses to a variety of questions. This process needs to be done using gradual release. From think-aloud [I do], to shared and interactive responding [We do] to independent responding [You do] over time.

I hope that this will help give you direction when delivering explicit written response lessons, as well as your students improving their written responses!
