Students view stomata under a microscope in this lab activity!
The lab activity outlines how to make a nail polish impression of the underside of a leaf. The technique used secures the leaf during the procedure making it easier for students to take the impression. A microscope image of a stoma is included to provide visual assistance to students. After students successfully take an impression they count stomata present in a field of view.
Three review and apply questions are included to promote student understanding of stomata.
Use this procedure to extend student understanding by having them compare leaves grown in different conditions or leaves from multiple species.
