After learning about Impressionist artists, students pick their own artist from a list of options based on the resources available, and they research their Impressionist. Following the guidelines, students imagine they are the artist they have been studying and create a diary entry.
It should include:
A snapshot of the artist's life (no birth dates or death dates)
Describe a famous painting
Describe the artist's style of art (what impressionist characteristics can you notice in their work?)
Include a small colored sketch
Meet the length requirement of one page handwritten
The example I give them is from the perspective of Vincent Van Gogh, even though he is a post impressionist artist. My students have some prior knowledge of his art and life. Requirements and example are editable.
This assignment can be modified for any age group. For my fifth and sixth graders we used the books from the collection called "Getting to Know the World's Greatest Artists" and I highly recommend them. They cost between $6-$8 on Amazon.
