Learning targets: Students will demonstrate proficiency in developing voice in writing; students will grow more comfortable with timed impromptu writing.

How: Students will write from the point of view of a terrified food item that knows it will soon be eaten; students will be given a specific duration in which to complete this activity.

Materials included: 1. A detailed directions sheet. 2. A general evaluative rubric. All are WORD DOCUMENTS.

You may wish to tweak the documents to reflect your students' specific needs.

I find brief writing activities like this are especially useful in Creative Writing classes, for they emphasize core concepts in the field, but they also prime students for timed writing assessments. Further, an activity like this may make a great formative to determine students' capabilities in establishing voice.
