Here you'll find what you need to take your students from a concrete understanding of the meaning and correlation between improper fractions and mixed numbers. Starting with note pages that are formatted for binder or interactive notebook use, you can guide your students with the use of important visuals and questioning strategies. Students then build on this representation and learn a procedure for quickly changing back and forth between the two forms, critical for computation skills to come. Have your students practice by reiterating the meaning of key terms, creating their own practice problems and visuals, and completing a short exit slip assessment.
Students must explore and ask questions for a much deeper understanding of the underlying patterns. I often do some group manipulative exploration with fraction circles or a related number talk before launching formally into the topic.
The notebook pages can be completed whole group or as a guided math center. This activity is an excellent way to encourage students to recognize patterns. The visuals are especially handy for students who have a "nope" mentality to fractions, students with special needs, ELLs, and any learner who might need the support of visuals to articulate their understanding. Once the notebook pages are completed with support I differentiate how much support is given on the other activities; I have found that building that early foundation and teaching students how to look back at their notes led to incredible fraction number sense success.
