Take a real life approach to converting between mixed numbers, and improper fractions.
This assignment takes a smoothie recipe, and a cookie recipe and asks the students to show the improper fraction or the mixed number pictorially, and then asks them to convert it and reduce it.
This assignment includes:
-2 recipes: Cookie ( converting improper to mixed), and Smoothie ( converting mixed to improper)
-a number line to order the ingredients from least to greatest
-problem solving questions that require conversions to compare numbers
-rubric to grade the assignment
When I do this assignment I usually bring smoothie materials in, and while they are doing their work I bring them up and show them the conversions, and we get to make a healthy snack as well!
