PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Improv!

This package includes everything you need to teach your students about the basics of improvisation. It focuses on spontaneous and planned improvisation, with the final project being a twisted fairy tale that uses planned improvisation.

In this improvisation unit students will learn:
• Planned vs. spontaneous improvisation
• Characterization
• Motivation
• Blocking vs. accepting
• Advancing, chivalry, and endowment
• Storytelling
• Risk taking and acceptance of failure

These objectives will help students tell stories effectively throughout the course, whatever the future projects will be. Effective acting can only occur with basic training in development of character, story structure and setting.

This is a unit I would easily teach at the junior or senior high level. The activities and lessons are simple and easily understood. The unit covers basic improvisation terminology and practice. You don’t need to have a degree in Dramatic Education to teach this unit! You could print off this entire package and teach the first lesson today!

This unit includes:
• 12 lesson plans for a 60 minute class
• 29 games and activities
• 11 circle time discussion questions
• 12 journal prompt posters
• 12 journal starters
• Rubric and assignment sheet for twisted fairy tale project
• Character handout
• Unit-at-a-glance
• 7 improv quote posters

Activities can be easily adapted to meet the needs of your classroom. For instance, if your class period is shorter or longer, activities can be eliminated, and many activities can be repeated, or played for a longer period of time. There are ample activities per lesson plan and you may choose to leave some out. The culminating project could be changed to something that fits your group of students. For instance you could swap the activity to a theatre sports competition or a collective theatre project for a more advanced group.
