Need to improve the quality of classroom discussions? Use this power-point to teach students the qualities of a good discussion. Students can take notes on sentence starters that can help them contribute to the discussion as well as the concepts that are the driving force of quality discussions. Teachers can recreate the green concept slides as letter size cards that can be shown to students as reminders to help move a discussion along. The red slide can be recreated as a stop sign to signal a negative behavior that should be stopped. These cards helped me lead structured discussions students enjoyed and found productive. Once these concepts are practiced and internalized, the teacher can be less of a leader and more of an observer. A student can also be chosen as a leader, which works amazingly well for Socratic seminars.
