Using a non-fiction text as a primary source with three additional articles, this performance based assessment (PBA), commonly called a synthesis prompt, acts as a strong versatile conclusion to the In Cold Blood unit. This essay prompt comes with an introduction plus three cited excerpted articles PLUS TWO student model essays. As the articles are lengthy, I assigned this prompt to my honors and AP as a take home essay, giving them one week to complete it. With my college prep course, I taught and modeled this prompt, spending two 80 minute class periods on prompt analysis; reading and annotating the articles;and then analyzing and evaluating the two student models. I used this as a introduction to synthesis with my college prep instead of a closure activity as I did with my honors and AP. I truly feel this prompt serves multiple purposes for all my classes.
