Author's notes: This unit was originally created for an AP or PAP English class with the primary focus being on Capote's claim that he created a new genre of writing - the non-fiction novel, so the majority of activities/writing assignments are designed to encourage students to think in this direction while evaluating the authenticity of Capote's claim. Additionally, this unit was created with freshman/sophomore readers in mind, so the content has been edited to exclude the more mature moments in the book as well as in the included short story, articles, and biographical information of Truman Capote. However, please do not assume that because this unit is based on excerpts from the novel that it would not be challenging to older students; on the contrary, this unit is comprised of activities and questions requiring thoughtful analyses and reflections. Consequently, this unit allows for an analytical reading of excerpts from In Cold Blood that can be completed in as little as three weeks (based on fifty minute class periods) with some outside of class reading for students. When you purchase this unit, you will receive everything you need including a daily schedule, graphic organizers, attached articles, and links to video clips, as well as the edited bio information and short story.
