This unit allows the students to work in groups to completely make up their own newscast. They will also design their own product and create a commercial to go in the newscast. This newscast incorporates narrative writing because the students make up their own stories. It also includes informative writing because the stories are presented as facts. The advertisement and commercial represent argumentative writing. The stories include figurative language and some incorporate context clues. The students create a PowerPoint slide which is a technology standard, and the students present their newscasts—speaking skills. Finally, the students participate in active listening skills. This project can be a bit time consuming if you do all parts of it. However, it can incorporate up to 20 Common Core standards all in one 6-9-week project including the activities within the power points. You can also require different things in the student stories depending upon what you’re teaching at that time. Example: must include at least one compound sentence, one compound/complex sentence and one prepositional phrase.
