"In Love And War," is a 1996 drama film based on the book "Hemingway In Love and War" by Henry Villard and James Nagel, starring Chris O'Donnell and Sandra Bullock. The setting is World War I when Hemingway was a young soldier in Italy. Hemingway was wounded and sent to a military hospital where he shared a room with Villard (who co-authored the book on which the film is based). One of the hospital nurses was Agnes Von Kurowsky. The young, intense Ernie falls madly in love with nurse Agnes, and she with him, but the relationship doesn't work out, and Ernie is devastated. Hemingway, it is said, was deeply affected by this relationship and wrote several stories about intense romantic relationships, including "A Farewell To Arms," based on intense love fueled by the horrors of war. The film makers are said to have taken some liberties with the facts, yet this is a compelling and plausible story wherein students will 'see' how intense relationships develop and then disappear. Not every story, as in real life, has a happy ending, therefore must be used as a springboard for growth of character.
