The activity in this resource is designed to help students make connections between what they are learning in math class and the real world. Students will have the opportunity to use the skills they have gained in math class and use them towards real scenarios. In this case, your students will get to design their dream room when provided with specific dimensions and a budget. Your students will enjoy this activity while strengthening their number sense skills in a very real way!
I typically use this activity as a culminating/assessment activity to a unit on perimeter and area. You will also want to make sure that your students are comfortable working with decimals, using all operations.
Within this project students will need to calculate specific costs of items they want in their room in order to stay within a certain budget, as well as make sure that everything they purchase can fit nicely within the dimensions of their room.
