We must understand a writer's tone in order to interpret meaning. Since tone can be difficult for students to decipher, they often need a little help along the way. This tone analysis serves as a guide in two ways. First, it asks students a series of questions about the poem, examining the words, imagery, details, language, and sentence structure that contribute to the tone. Then, since students often do not know where to begin when turning their answers into a written analysis, it provides a brief frame which helps them structure and compose their writing.
A rubric is included.
