This lesson works in conjunction with the 4 Essential Understandings of the Utah state Social Studies core. It can be adapted for any state and is a great interdisciplinary connection. Although Detroit is a distance from Utah, residents here need to learn about what has happened to the economy and population there. What happens in one place still has effects on another. It also causes us to consider what we value in our own community. Students will learn about these things and apply them to their own lives, by asking themselves the question, "What do I value?".
