I love using this video as an introduction to The Crucible, but it could be used with other Puritan literature as well to give students a better understanding of the Puritan mindset. I actually love The Crucible, and I think it often gets a “bad rep” because students don’t fully understand the time period and the events surrounding the Salem Witch Trials. This video does a great job of setting the stage for Arthur Miller’s classic play. It gives students much-needed context and valuable background knowledge before they dive into, what some will find, a very challenging read.
This lesson includes:
1. Notes for the teacher.
2. Two links to the full documentary. The entire documentary is roughly 45 minutes in length.
3. 40 questions for students to answer as they watch the video.
4. And a key for the 40-question worksheet.
