I once read that Billy Joel told a reporter that he wrote the song "We Didn't Start the Fire" because he wanted students to know about some of the most important events and people who touched our lives and societies. I've always been fascinated by that idea. Also, I've always loved listening to Billy Joel, so it's no surprise that this unit features Billy Joel's "We Didn't Start the Fire". The lyrics to this song provide the topic list for the research project. From there, it's up to the students to find out why these people or events were so important and they have to determine how the world would be different if this person or event never existed. The best thing about this project is that it covers almost all of the Bloom's steps and it combines music and research in a seamless way.
