The following activities are intended to support a unit teaching ‘In the Heat of the Night’ by John Ball. They could be adapted for any novel.
1. Vocabulary Chart
2. SWBS (Somebody-wanted-but-so sentence)
Much like the vocab chart, students are asked to pull one area of conflict from each chapter and talk it out. As well, they need to make a prediction for the following chapter.
3. Literature Circle Roles
4. Give One Get One & Snowball - two discussion strategies with questions.
5. Graffiti Rubric
Before reading the novel I had students create graffiti walls about the 1960’s, explanation and a rubric is provided for assessment.
6. Write into ______
An activity that has students consider what the characters are doing when we do not encountering them in the story.
