PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

These activities are designed to accompany the book In the Tall, Tall Grass by Denise Fleming. This packet does not include the book and is not intended to replace the book. Here is a detailed look at the activities that are included:

•In the Tall, Tall Grass Lotto Game: There are 5 different lotto boards that include pictures of the 12 animals in the book. There are calling cards that include 3 different clues about each animal so that your students can practice making inferences and listening for details.

•Sentence Strip Activity: Cut out the pictures on page 10 and put them in the tall grass on page 9. Use the sentence strip at the top of page 9 to complete the sentence “I see ______ in the tall, tall grass” for each animal. You may want to use Velcro dots to put the animals in the grass and/or complete the sentence strip.

•Action Match Up: Cut out the action cards on page 15 to match each animal to the correct action using the boards on pages 11-14.

•Verb Tense Sort: There are 2 different verb tense mats on pages 16 and 17. One mat contains regular past tense –ed, third person singular –s, and future tense. The other mat contains regular past tense –ed, present progressive –ing, and future tense. You can choose which form of present tense verbs that you want your students to practice. There are animal and action cards on pages 18-27 that you can cut out and use to complete the sentences on the verb mats. There are 2 different versions of the animal/action cards (one set with color-coded borders and one set with all black borders) so that you can choose the level of prompting that your students receive.

•Rhyming Words Sort: There are 12 caterpillar cards with each of the action words from the story. There are also 48 leaf cards that contain words that rhyme with the actions on the caterpillar cards (4 rhyming words for each action). Your students can sort the rhyming words to the correct caterpillar.

•Tall/Short Flashcards: 12 different flashcards that ask students to identify which animal is in tall grass or which animals is in short grass.

•Yes/No Questions: 24 flashcards that ask yes/no questions about the animals in the story.

•Plural –s Flashcards: 12 flashcards that ask students to fill-in-the-blank to complete each sentence with either the singular or plural form of each animal’s name.

•Similarities/Differences Cards: 16 flashcards that ask students to describe how 2 animals from the book are alike and different.

•Open-ended Roll and Cover Pages: 6 roll and cover pages that can be used as reinforcement during a variety of activities. The first 3 pages require 2 dice (students roll one die to determine the row and one die to determine the column). The second 3 pages only require 1 die (students roll one die to determine the column). Your students can cover the pictures with bingo chips or you can laminate the pages and use dry erase markers to cross off the pictures.
