An instructional guide for kindergarten teachers to incorporate physical activity into the classroom in order to engage students and improve academic performance. Four CCSS aligned lesson plans in Math, ELA, and Science that tie into PE standards. In recent years, schools have eliminated physical activity as it is viewed as time that could be spent on academic work. As a result, physical activity (PA) has decreased during the school day and children are not receiving the recommended daily amount of PA (Brusseau & Hannon, 2015). A meta-analysis conducted by Sibley, Benjamin, and Etnier (2003) showed that there was a positive correlation between physical activity and several categories of cognitive performance (as cited in Sattelmair & Ratey, 2009). This positive correlation between PA and academic performance reinforces the need for PA in the school environment. Integrating PA into lesson plans provides an alternative to the problem schools face with eliminating physical education. The following instructional guide includes strategies, references, and resources for integrating PA into existing kindergarten curriculum and provides Common Core State Standard aligned lesson plans that actively engage students and integrate PA.
