This series of writing practices is designed to increase students’ writing endurance. Teaching Advanced Placement Literature, I have noticed that one of the greatest obstacles to student success on the AP essays is their inability (and perceived inability) to write at a high level for a long period of time (on the AP, they need to be able to write for two full hours). This issue can also translate to difficulties on college blue-book exams. Endurance being the issue, I thought of high-intensity interval trainings, like the Tabata Protocol, designed by Izumi Tabata. These exercise programs are designed to increase physical endurance. By analogy, I created a program to increase students' writing endurance over a semester or a year. This program significantly improved my students' ability to write for long periods of time! (And they enjoyed it!) Includes: Narrative, Detailed Lesson Plans w/Objectives, and Writing Log on Excel Spreadsheet.
