Mini Lessons (Levels 1 - 8)

These modified independent and dependent variable lessons are unique because they break problem solving down into manageable chunks for struggling learners while teaching them to apply problem solving skills.

Levels 1 - 4: Students are given real world problems that require identifying independent and dependent variables, using input output tables to show variable relationships, and writing function equations.

Levels 5 - 8: Students use function equations to complete input output tables, write equations from ordered pairs, and represent given equations in tables and graphs.

These lessons are leveled to ensure students demonstrate learning in a variety of ways which better prepares them for standardized testing.

Each worksheet comes with a stated LO (learning objective) and guided lessons (simple step by step notes) on the left column. Students can easily reference these notes while working. The two additional columns of problems provide ample opportunities for guided and independent practice. Two DOL (demonstration of learning) problems at the end provide the teacher with an opportunity to assess learning and take grades as needed.

A second worksheet provides homework review that aligns directly to the lesson. Additional mixed review worksheets provide the essential review and reteach that is needed to ensure mastery.

note: I am continually adding additional lessons and expect to have additional levels of mini lessons available this year.

Using this instructional format has engaged my struggling learners and allowed them to demonstrate consistent growth.

Texas TEK 6.6B, 6.9A, 6.1B, 6.1E, 6.1F

Skills and Concepts;

Level 1: Identify independent and dependent variables from word problems.

Level 2: Use input output tables to show the relationship between independent and dependent variables

Level 3: Write function equations that represent multiplication and division relationships between independent and dependent variables.

Level 4: Write two step function equations that represent multiplications and addition relationships between independent and dependent variables.

Level 5: Write function equations and complete input output tables

Level 6: Read ordered pairs to write an equation and complete input output tables

Level 7: Represent given equations in tables and graphs

Level 8: Represent given two step equations in tables

These materials have proven to be an effective tool when modifying lessons for remedial students and providing mandated IEP modifications as it provides comprehensive and sequential remediation of skills, concepts, and problem solving applications.

Independent and Dependent Variable Mini Project

Texas TEKs 6.5A, 6.6B, 6.9C, 6.10A

A fun way to actively engage students in learning.

Students can be assigned to work individually or in small groups.

Each individual / group is given a project card and randomly selects a scenario card. They follow the directions identifying the independent and dependent variables, creating a poster that illustrates the relationship between the two variables, plugging the data into an input output table, and writing a function equation.

note: The scenario cards range from simple to more complex. I recommend setting aside some of the less complex cards for struggling learners to choose from.

Once students have correctly completed their posters and tables they should be given a stretch cards that require they select additional scenario cards, identifying the variables as independent and dependent, creating an input output table and extending the data using additional independent variables of their choosing.

In most cases students will use rulers to create their own data tables. I recommend allowing struggling learners to use the tables provided.

Contents include 18 problem solving task cards. Students read word problems and differentiate between the independent and dependent variables. Word problem on one side and solution on the other.

Two-Sided Problems Solving Task Cards provide an effective approach to independent practice and reteach that is necessary for mastery. They have been used to successfully prepare struggling students for the difficult state assessment tests.

These materials make great math centers and homework practice. Students are able to work independently and receive immediate feedback as to their accuracy.
