In an effort to prepare my grade 8 students for independent work in high school, I have introduced the Independent Genre Study Project. While I use this in grade 8, it could easily be used from grade 6-10.
This booklet is handed out at the beginning of September. It asks kids to read five books of their own choosing that come from five different genres (Historical Fiction, Science Fiction, Fantasy, Biography/Autobiography, and Realistic Fiction) and complete three tasks for each one. I have one due every two months to spread this over a September to June school year, but you could have one a month and complete this in one semester. Students love choice, so having them choose what order to complete these projects in and which books they would like to read is motivating.
RUBRICS ARE INCLUDED FOR EACH PROJECT!
Each Genre includes the following:
1. Learning Goals
2. Mini Task One: About elements of that genre and relating those elements to the student's specific book choice.
3. A short written task (report, fan fiction, etc)
4. A larger creative task (always two for students to choose from)
Questions? Don't hesitate to ask!
