The Hands-On Phonics Poems Bundle is a collection of phonics poems and hands-on activities that focus on sound mastery and fluency! This bundle includes more than 1,000 pages of phonics poetry fun. It includes more than 100 phonics poems, plus correlating hands-on activities for each sound-spelling.
The activities in this resource were designed to give you flexibility. You can use the activities at a fluency station, during small group instruction, in Word Work/phonics tubs, or even for independent practice. You can decide what works best for you and your students.
I provide five hands-on learning opportunities that allow students ample time tointeract with each of the different focus sound-spellings, including:
- I Can Sort Words
- I Can Read the Poem
- I Can Visualize the Text
- I Can Build Words
- I Can Write My Own Poem or Story
How you incorporate these activities and where you fit them into your day is 100% up to you! You could add them to your existing Word Work station or you could create a separate phonics fluency station in your classroom. Do what works best for you and your students! I created five activities so that you can easily stretch out the focus sound-spelling/”I Can” statements for five days, if you wish.
I Can Sort Words: Activity One/Day One is a hands-on activity to get students ready to read the poem. Students will sort each word according to whether it is a real word or a nonsense word. After they have sorted the words, they can self-check by using a magnifying glass to look at the tiny, upside-down word on each card that reads either “real” or “nonsense.” Afterwards, students can select words from the “real” words and write them in sentences using the simple self-correcting writing sheet shown below.
I Can Read the Poem: Activity Two/Day Two is when students will be introduced to the poem for the first time. Students will read the poem three times and will circle/highlight all of the words that have the focus sound-spelling. I provide different “I Can Read” cards which encourage students to read the poem in different voices. Super motivating! You can laminate these poems and have students use a dry erase marker to highlight/circle or you can print them for students to keep. Adding whisper phones, microphones, finger beams, and googly-eyed finger-pointers add some novelty and fun to this activity.
I Can Visualize the Text: Activity Three/Day Three - Students will re-read the poem and will then draw a detailed picture of what they visualized. When readers can picture the text, they better understand and remember it! Brain researcher Allan Paivio says it best, “By creating mental images from the words on a page or screen, we tap into both the verbal and visual-spatial representational systems, making abstract concepts more concrete and thus more meaningful and memorable.”
I Can Build Words: Activity Four/Day Four - After students have had ample time to read and pick apart the poem, they can begin building words from the poem! Giving students achoice on how to build the words will keep them highly motivated and engaged.
I Can Write a Poem or Story: Activity Five/Day Five - The final activity asks students to take words with the focus sound-spelling and write their own poem/story. It’s important to give students ample to correctly write and use the words in their own writing!
Phonics Poetry Journal: If you would rather students complete a phonics poetry journal, I provide that option for you in the bundle. Students can glue the activity sheets in a composition notebook or they can use a binder/folder. It’s up to you! All labels and sheets are provided for you in the bundle.
