Research has shown that student choice is essential in their connection to literature. I have found that using reading workshops where students are able to choose their own novels improves their reading comprehension and their ability to analyze literature because they enjoy what they are reading. The only problem, however, is that I have not read every book they choose, nor can I make up individual quizzes and tests for each book. This packet requires that students look at the literary elements in their novels. I have used it as a reading guide, as a starter for literary discussions, and even as a test.
