Learning Objective

The student will analyze a literary work of their choice using the elements of fiction.

Product Description

Book Bistro is a research-based independent reading program that motivates students to read independently while promoting adolescent literacy. It's flexible and easy to assess. It's essentially a high-interest, middle school book report that taps into the social nature of middle school students. The assignment puts the fun back into fundamentals, while remaining manageable for both teachers and students!

Here is how it works:

Students read a book of their choice for Independent Reading. An Annotation Guide reminds them what to focus on when they read. Students complete a brief assignment that serves as the basis for Literature Circle discussion.

The Literature Circle discussion is based on high-interest questions that students enjoy discussing.

The teacher can decide how much and how to assess it. Sample rubrics are included.

This activity provides a solid foundation for writing literary analysis essays. Students also improve listening and speaking skills during the small-group discussion.

This product would also work well for a summer reading assignment for middle or high school students. Two different assignments give you flexibility--you can use them to differentiate instruction, or you can use the basic assignment early in the year and the more comprehensive assignment later in the year. Both can be completed independently.

This assignment is research-based, fosters a love of reading, and promotes adolescent literacy.
