This unit contains information for engaging students in reading independently both in and out of the classroom. Students get to pick a book of their choice to read mostly outside of school for leisure, though I typically give them some in-class time for reading, as well. This file contains:
*A book talk sign-up sheet
*Instructions for the summative assessment: a poster displaying various informative and creative information about the book the student chose to read.
*4 book logs that hit on different standards and areas of thinking (summary, reflection, symbolism, direct quotes, moral/theme)
*A rubric that may be used by the teacher
I love this assignment because it lets students have a choice in what they would like to read, which hopefully creates lifelong readers! Because it can be completed mostly outside of the classroom, you can carry on with your curriculum concurrently. I give students a start and end date for them to read their novel, as well as a date that they will present their book talk poster to the class.
