Ready to add more independent reading to your middle school classroom? Want to try reader’s workshop? Hoping to bring in more fiction that’s differentiated to student interests?

Track genres and progress without expensive programs, points, or book reports!

My CCSS-aligned “Book of the Month” program was first used in an urban high school class in which students prided themselves on never having finished a book before. By the end of the year, they were no longer reluctant readers and had read a total of 9 self-chosen books (in addition to our whole-class reads). I further edited this system after completing a master’s degree, a year as a literacy specialist, and experience as a middle school language arts teacher.

This “Book of the Month” system is a great way to add routine reading into the year.
• Instead of lengthy assignments that kill the joy of books, logs and calendars track student achievement without adding so much work that the reading feels like work, too.
• Each month’s paperwork can be assessed, but the data can also be collected in a folder to serve as a Reading Portfolio for the school year!
• Surveys at the beginning and end of the year can also serve as evidence of change in student attitudes and abilities.

This download includes everything you need to jumpstart an independent reading program, whether you launch it for the full year or condense it into one semester. You can either use the suggested timeline for genres, or change what books are read which months.
