This unit is a great way for students to take some ownership for their learning and increase their love of reading. When I would assign my students to read 20 minutes every night and that was it, they had no incentive or desire to read each night. Giving them the chance to create their own goal and have something to work towards that is specifically for their abilities really motivates them to read more and to love reading more!
There is a parent letter home to introduce the S.U.P.E.R. Readers to parents. I have included a blank page for you to create your own letter to parents if you’d like.
Included in this unit are calendars for each month and a blank editable calendar. There are calendars for September 2016-June 2019. I start off with the first month’s goal as 400 minutes total (It’s 20 minutes per night). This sets a baseline for students to create future goals. Each month following, the students create their own goals. If the student doesn’t reach a goal one month, we discuss why that might have happened and go forward creating the next goal.
Once the month is over and the reading logs are returned, I complete a certificate for each student. There is an award certificate for students who met their goal and an improvement certificate for those that did not. The certificates are in color and black/white. There is also an editable version.
**UPDATED** Just added Brag Tags for each month. These are great to use when the students' meet their monthly goals.
