Howdy! I created this 5-day lesson plan on Power Point to share with my ELA team for the week that we teach the kids to read independently. I thought some of you may get some use out of it as well.
I based this lesson plan off the common-core standards RF.3.4 and RF.3.4A. I also included the ELPS as well as an "I Can" Statement card that you can print and hang up as your "I-Can" statement as well as an "I Will" statement for the ELPS.
I also want to get better at targeting vocabulary, so included a vocabulary card as well.
I have taught 3rd grade Language Arts for a while, and am a full believer in repetition. So, every day lists the "I Can" Statement, the "I Will" statement, Essential Questions, and vocabulary. These cards are the same each day.
What changes are the "I Do", "We Do", and "You Do" cards.
I also included (6) printables...
- a rubric that you can print and feel free to grade it however you like. It is not wordy at all and it is listed in the slides every day as well so that your students see that they are being held accountable for how they choose to read.
- a quiz to give at the end to see who comprehended your 5-day lesson.
- a blank hand for your students to glue into their Reader's Notebooks and jot down the 5-Finger rule
- a t-chart so that students can glue this into their notebook and compare fake reading vs. real reading
- a table for students to list the 6 rules I listed to ensure that they are getting the most out of their independent reading time
- and a reading log that I created. My students glue a reading log into the front of their Reader's Notebooks for books used in class and keep one in their homework folder for books read at home.
Here is a breakdown of each day.
Day 1 - The teacher and students collaborate on what it looks like to read independently. I even created a mini-anchor chart that students could copy into their Reader's Notebooks.
Day 2 - On this day, I wanted to set them up for success in finding that "Just Right Book". On the slides, I included the 5-finger rule. You are going to model every day with them, but on this day you want to model choosing the wrong book versus choosing the right book.
Day 3 - Real reading vs. fake reading. What does it look like? What is the difference? You are going to pretend reading and looking at the window, stopping to talk to a student, looking at the door. They will laugh but this is what they look like when they read. They have got to make themselves focus on the book in front of them. One slide contains a T-chart where students can write examples of fake reading vs. real reading.
Day 4 - On this day, you will walk them through what it looks like to track their reading using a Reading log. There are ton of these on TPT or sometimes I use Book It. They have some neat free ones that my students love.
Day 5 - And finally, on day 5, you are going to teach a signal to stop reading and put their eyes on you. Whether you ring a bell, play chimes, do a call-back, you will need some kind of strategy to show them when to stop.
The rubric is listed in the preview. It's the next to last slide that you can print off and keep notes on. These notes are great for parents to see what their child is doing in class or could be used for RTI when assessing a student who is a struggling reader. Use it however you like.
Remember that a PPT should never do everything for you. It is a supplemental tool that helps me keep track of my time and allows me to teach at the fast pace that I enjoy:) You will still want to use books, anchor charts, etc. The kids need something interactive that they can put their hands on.
I tried keeping the words at a minimal so that the kids weren't bored, but I made it detailed enough that if you follow this plan your students will be successful readers!
