This packet will give you an alternative to the traditional reading logs. Independent Reading Letters offer rich, meaningful homework (or class work if you choose) that has students analyzing their independent reading at a much deeper level and citing textual evidence. Great for achieving those Common Core Standards!
The reading letters require students to write a four paragraph letter to their teacher that goes beyond simply a summary of what they've read. Instead, the focus is on their thinking while they are reading. Given a list of thinking prompts, the students choose from discussing their connections made, questions, visualizations, inferences, reflections, and thoughts about the characters, plot, and author's purpose -- all while also having to cite textual evidence to back up their claims.
I use these reading letters throughout the year as an alternative to homework pages. At times I will even vary my requirements of what the students discuss depending on the focus of our lessons. For example, if we are focusing mainly on theme that week, I will ask the students to devote one of their paragraphs on analyzing the theme of their independent book.
