Monitor independent reading with a daily reading log. Each day focuses on a different reading strategy or skill (making connections, summarizing, synthesizing, visualizing, and classifying). In addition, I ask students to not only tell me, but to show me with a graphic organizer. I use Thinking Maps in my classroom but I know that not everyone uses them or has not been trained with them, so I did not include them in this version. If you are a Thinking Maps user, simply apply the right map to the thought process I am tapping into and add the frame for a deeper analysis of the response.
