This is a log that I have used with students for them to independently track their reading. It is so very important in middle school to truly develop the habits of a good reader. I have found this to be very helpful in achieving this goal. Each night students have a place to record their reading - including an optional parent initial section. I check this daily as part of my start of class routine. I use a quick "smiley face" stamp and quickly assess which students have completed the log. The log lasts 2 full weeks. What makes this better than the other logs out there is that it serves many purposes - included is a rubric for self-assessment, a place to record the genres read, as well as a place to record literary devices "in action" that students discovered while reading. This pairs well with my independent reading minutes chart as a way to promote and monitor independent reading.
