With my 8th graders, I am trying a new system for keeping track of independent reading. It's a bit more mature and independent than what I've done before. All students do is keep track of pages read each week -- they MUST finish a book by the end of the month (4 weeks).
As the year goes on, I will have specific genre requirements. Also, I try to make sure students select books on their reading levels of appropriate length. At the end of the month, students complete an independent reading book project as an assessment.
Includes Teacher Checklist so you can keep track of title/author -- I do a few mini lessons on Genre before introducing this so students have to tell me the genre of their books, which I use as a quick assessment.
I check their logs each week -- they get a check plus for being on track to finish (1/4th of the way done by end of week 1, 1/2 of the way done by end of week 2, etc.). Students who are behind get a check, and students who didn't read that week get a check minus.
Check out my page for their independent reading lists/logs!
